Welcome to Introduction to Music Theory! π΅
Course Overview
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the foundational principles of Western music theory. Whether you're a budding musician, a curious listener, or preparing for more advanced music studies, this course will equip you with the essential building blocks to understand how music works.
Through weekly lessons, practical exercises, and creative assignments, you will develop skills in musical notation, rhythm, scales, intervals, chords, and harmonic analysis β skills that will empower you to read, write, analyze, and discuss music with confidence.
What You Will Learn
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Read and write standard musical notation, including staffs, clefs, and note durations
- Identify and construct major and minor scales, and determine key signatures
- Recognize, measure, and notate musical intervals
- Build and analyze triads, seventh chords, and their inversions
- Apply Roman numeral analysis to diatonic chord progressions
- Analyze and compose basic harmonic progressions using functional harmony
- Identify and incorporate chromatic chords (including Neapolitan chords) in musical contexts
